| Fallen Angels and Marriage | Added: Feb-25-05 |
The Scriptures to which you refer are Matthew 22:30; Mark 12:25; and Luke 20:35-36. These Scriptures concern the fact that angels neither marry nor are given in marriage in heaven. Note that these Scriptures refer to angels in heaven, NOT those angels which "kept not their first estate" and "left their own habitation" (Jude 1:6). Additionally, the Scriptures above refer to what we will be like in heaven concerning marriage. These Scriptures do not tell us whether angels are able or unable to mate, only that they do not marry "in heaven." Many conclude that because angels in heaven do not marry that they cannot possess the ability to have sex, especially when taking human form. Again, it doesn't say they can't have sex, but they don't.
Those angels who followed Lucifer and were cast out of heaven with him (Revelation 12:4) are referred to as the "fallen angels." According to Scripture, angels can appear and disappear and take on physical human form (example: Genesis 19:15-16; Acts 1:10). In such form they possess all the qualities of men as well as powers bestowed upon them by God. Likewise, the fallen angels were able to take human form possessing all the qualities of a man. Therefore they stepped out of their own habitation and cohabited with women of Earth, not just unmarried women or unbethrothed women, but they seized (lawkakh - took) any woman they desired, even married women. The Hebrew in Genesis 6:2 for "wives" is ishshaw nawsheem and refers to an "adulterous woman or wife."
The Offspring: The offspring of the fallen angels and human women, called the Nephilim, cannot take physical form. Their activity is found in many Scriptures, but never in human form, example: Matthew 8:31; Mark 5:12; Luke 8:32-33. Although the Nephilim cannot take human form, they possess the capability to possess those humans who dabble with "familiar spirits." The ability of taking human form is one reason for casting the fallen angels (not the Nephilim) into the lowest abyss of hell. That is to say, the fallen angels were cast into the abyss so they would not be able to take human form or cohabit with women and produce more offspring. They are to be kept there until the time of the fulfillment of Revelation 9 and Jude 1:6b.
Note: Angels are always portrayed in Scripture as male in gender. There is no evidence of female angels other than in man's depiction of angels.
Again, the angels of Matthew, Mark and Luke (above) are in heaven, not fallen angels. Throughout the Scriptures angels are mistaken for men: they ate (with Abraham and Sarah); they fought in Sodom and Gomorrah; in II Kings, one angel, after dinner, wiped out 185,00 of the Syrian army.
Hebrews tells us that many of us entertain angels unawares (Hebrews 13:2). This tells us that angels are capable of being mistaken for men (even by the women of Genesis 6). The angels who are presently in heaven have witnessed the plight of the fallen angels and are faithful to God. They have not and will not leave their first estate or habitation. Their faithfulness has been proven throughout time.
