What is Gopher Wood?  Added:
 Jan-29-04
God told Noah to build an ark of gopher wood (Genesis 6:14). This is the only mention of the word in the Bible. Many have rendered this wood as the pine or cedar; but the weight of authority is in favor of understanding it as the cypress tree. The cypress tree grows in abundance in Chaldea and Armenia. The Hebrew definition given to the word gopher means "to house in; a kind of tree or wood (as used for building), apparently the cypress: - gopher." Most Bible scholars believe in all probability that the gopher wood was the cypress, an evergreen tree which is very adaptable to ship building and is long-lasting when water-soaked. Some forms of cypress even grow in swamps. The cypress was used extensively by the Phoenicians for ship-building. It is possible that the influence Noah had on civilization both in legacy and unsolicited worship, played a great role in shaping the industry of early ship-building. The words apparenty and probability reveal uncertainty, but the greatest evidence points to gopher wood as being the cypress tree.
