Scripture2 Scripture

is based upon the belief that Scripture will interpret Scripture when personal bias is left out of the deduction. Whether symbolic, spiritual, literal or whatever the interpretative method, Scripture will not contradict when "rightly dividing the word of truth."

Dividing the Concubine

What is Jude 1: 20-21
talking about?

The context of these verses fall in line with verses 17 thru 25 in that they are an exhortation to believers in the midst of those who mock and those who teach false doctrine. There will be mockers who are worldly minded and who separate themselves according to their own teachings. They do not have the Spirit of God in them. Building yoursleves up is much like the building of our bodies by body-building except that Jude 20:-21 speaks of faith-building. It takes much spiritual exercise and patience. The Christian's main focus should rest in faith-building. Bodybuilding is good, but faith-building is better. True believers are to build themselves up, not in boasting and pride, but in the building of faith, How? 1. The believer builds upon the foundation of holy faith (v.20). What does this mean? It means that we are to be built up in our beliefs, that is, the truth that we have learned from Scripture. It is the Holy Scriptures that tell us about the Lord Jesus and about man and his world. 2. The believer builds faith by praying in the Holy Spirit (v. 20). How? a. under His guidance and influence, energy and power. b. that we seek and ask His help. c. that we focus our minds upon Christ. d. that we ask and depend upon the Holy Spirit to cleanse us and make us what we should be. e. that we walk in the Spirit day by day. f. that we set aside time every day for prayer (Rom. 8:26-27; 15:30; Eph. 1:15-16; 6:18; Col. 4:2; I Thess. 5:17; I Chron. 16:11). 3. The believer builds himself up by keeping himself in the love of God (v.21). How? a. through disicipline by God's Word (Jn. 15:10-11). b. by keeping our bodies in subjection (I Cor. 9:26-27). c. by holding forth the word of life (Phil. 2:16). d. by resisting sin (James 1:14-16). e. by living what we profess (I Jn. 3:3). 4. The believer builds himself up by looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ; by looking for that glorious day of His return (v.21). This is faith and hope. By exercising our faith we become stronger in the Lord, thus building ourselves up. We are faith-builders.
