Dividing the Concubine

Resurrection by a witch?

Question: Didn't the Witch of Endor have resurrection power? Didn't she cause Samuel, a prophet of God, to arise? Answer: One one occassion, Saul, the first king of Israel, called out to the Lord for aid, but the Lord didn't answer as quickly as Saul thought He should. Therefore, in his impatience, Saul went to the Witch of Endor for answers (I Samuel 28:6-7). Saul's impatient, self-will was the seed of his downfall and eventual ruin (I Samuel 12:12-13); he eventually killed himself (I Samuel 31:4).

Saul's sin of colaborating with the devil's worker caused the Spirit of the Lord to depart from him (I Samuel 16:14). Consulting familiar spirits opens one up to possession by demonic spirits. This many times causes bouts of madness as is evidenced in the man at the tombs of Gadarene (Mark 5:1-5) and in Saul's continued disobedience and rash vows (I Samuel 15:11-23). A familiar spirit is a divining demon present in the physical body of the conjurer.

Note that the witch of Endor did not have anything to do with the raising of Samuel from the dead. As a matter of fact, when Samuel did arise (by God's power), the witch was frightened so badly that she cried out with a loud voice, I saw gods ascending out of the earth! Moreover, when asked, she did not know whether it was Samuel that she saw. She did say that she saw an old man with a mantle. She wasn't accustomed to seeing such a thing although she had a reputation of bringing up the dead (seances, etc). It frightened her terribly (I Samuel 28:13). The divining demon within her could not perform the act of resurrection. If demons could resurrect the dead, no one in heaven could rest and all of hell would be emptied. A demonic spirit can only provide a false resurrection as is witnessed through seances and the like.

There are stern warnings in Scripture against adhering to familiar spirits: Leviticus 19:31; 20:6; Deuteronomy 18:10,11; Isaiah 19:3,4.

Another person who dealt with familiar spirits was Manasseh. He was a wicked king who reigned in Jerusalem:

"And he (Manasseh) caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinom; also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards; he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger" (II Chronicles 33:6).

Notes of interest: Observer of times: the foretelling of the future by observing phases of the moon and stars, such as horoscopes, quija boards, palmistry, tea leaf reading, tarot cards and so on. Enchantments: to whisper chants and spells. Witchcraft: fortune tellers, seances and so forth. Familiar Spirits: includes witches who enquire of the dead. Wizards: persons pretending to be wise in magical arts and so on.
