However, trumpets were also used in the Old Testament by priests during services of sacrifice, especially to announce the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 25:9). The Day of Atonement was the only day required by Law for public fasting and humiliation. On that day, the nation of Israel was to publicly reveal atonement for its sins (Leviticus 23:27; 16:29; Numbers 29:7). It was a solemn, holy day celebrated with elaborate rituals (Leviticus 16; Hebrews 10:1-10).
The Hebrews also had a Feast of Trumpets, which was a large part of the celebration of the Passover. Strangers and native-born people alike were punished if they did not observe this feast. Only unleavened bread was to be eaten during this feast, commemorating the haste with which Israel left Egypt. In like manner, as the blood was drained from the sacrificial animal for the Passover, so the life or the power of leaven was removed from the bread offered to God.
Atonement And Trumpet Type In likeness, or type, the blowing of the seven trumpets of Revelation typifies the Day of Atonement and the Feast of Trumpets. In type, this Day of Atonement is not a twenty-four hour Period. It is the call for atonement, the cleansing of God's chosen people in order to present them to himself. Ezekiel states that God doesn't do this because of the people, but because of His name's sake (Ezekiel 36:22-23). God has promised to carry out the promise of Israel's restoration for the Millennial Period and it will be done.
The Feast of Trumpets is also a type: The blowing of the trumpets witness that the Messiah, Jesus, the true Passover Lamb, was rejected. Thus, the true Passover (of which all other Passovers are but shadows), was discarded and counted as nought (John 1:11). The earthly penalty for discarding the ultimate sacrifice (Jesus's death on the cross and spiritual kingdom) is the Tribulation Period, in particular, the last half (3 1/2 yrs.) of the Tribulation (yet future). It will take such a time for Israel to accept Jesus, the Messiah.
Trumpets will be sounded as a token of remembrance (during the Tribulation). They are a testimony before God of the rejection of the ultimate Passover Lamb. God's people must be brought back. This is why the judgments of the Great Tribulation must be executed. (Taken from The Unveiling by Keith Harris)
